CHAPTER 13

RORY

I’m supposed to be giving Petey his monthly anal gland expression right now, but instead, I’m sitting in a swanky BMW next to Lucas Lawson of all people. It’s Friday morning and we’re twisting through the mountain roads, inching closer and closer to our surprise destination by the minute. I have no clue what I’ve agreed to for the weekend, but I’m completely on board, even if it does mean he’s taking me out to the middle of the woods to murder me. At least I won’t have to go back into work after this.

Aw, who am I kidding? I’d miss my patients far too much for that.

“This is a really nice car,” I tell him, running my hands over the leather seats again like I’ve been doing for the last hour.

“Thanks. I have three more like it back in the parking garage.”

“What? Seriously?”

“No.” He laughs. “You’ve seen my apartment—do you really think I’d have three of the same car?”

“Maybe? I don’t know. You’re not what I assumed you’d be at all.”

It’s true. He’s far from what I had in my mind the first time I met him. Right away I knew he wasn’t the kind of guy I’d ever want to hang around. He oozed jock vibes, and not in the good way.

But the real Lawson… Well, he’s definitely not just a jock. He’s something so much more.

“Hmm. I’m not sure how to take that.”

“It’s a good thing,” I tell him.

He slides his gray eyes over to me momentarily before looking back at the road. It’s something he’s been doing the entire drive. It’s almost like he can’t believe I’m here.

Hell, I can’t believe I’m here either.

Obviously, I didn’t tell Auden about this, but when I did tell Casey, the shock on her face was immediate. It was quickly replaced by a high five and telling me to get the hell out of there before she called security on me. I, of course, reminded her we don’t have security and finished handing off my patients to Dr. Helms.

“Anyway,” Lawson continues, “I’m not like other guys in the league who come in and see the big dollar signs they throw our way, then turn right around and spend every last penny. I pay my bills, live in a modest apartment, splurged on a car, and take the rest of my money and invest it so when my hockey career is over, I’m not penniless. We’re heading to one of my investment properties now.”

“You have…investment properties?”

He laughs. “Yeah, I do. Does that surprise you?”

“Oh, I’m sorry. Do I need to repeat my previous question with even more shock shoved into my words?”

He grins. “No.”

He shakes his head, adjusting his grip on the steering wheel. I never knew watching a guy drive was something I was into, but I’m slowly starting to realize there are a lot of things Lawson does that I shouldn’t find attractive yet do.

“But yes, I do have several properties. I actually have a business degree.”

“What?”

“Okay, that’s the second time you’ve used a tone that’s a mix of disbelief and complete shock.
